Large inlet of the W Pacific Ocean, between NE China and the Korean peninsula. Famous for its fishing grounds, it connects with the E. China Sea on the south; the Shandong Peninsula extends into it from the west. It has an area of 180,000 sq mi (466,200 sq km) and a maximum depth of 338 ft (103 m). It derives its name from the color of the silt-laden water discharged into it by the Huang and other major Chinese rivers, incl. the Chang and Liao. Leading port cities include Shanghai and Tientsin in China, Inchon in S. Korea, and Nampo in N. Korea.
