vizier
Chief minister of the Abbasid caliphs, and later a high government official in various Muslim countries. The office was originally held and defined by the Barmakids in the 8th cent.; they acted as the caliph's and later the sultan's representative to the public. In the Ottoman empire, the title could be held by several people at once; under Mehmed II the position of grand vizier, the absolute representative of the sultan, was created. In pharaonic Egypt, a vizier was a civil officer who held viceregal power.
ginger
Herbaceous perennial plant (Zingiber officinale; family Zingiberaceae), probably native to SE Asia, or its aromatic, pungent rhizome, which is used as a spice, flavoring, food, and medicine. The spice has a slightly biting taste and is used, usually dried and ground, to flavor breads, sauces, curry dishes, confections, pickles, and ginger ale. The fresh rhizome, green ginger, is used in cooking. The leafy stems of the plant bear flowers in dense, conelike spikes. Oil distilled from the rhizome is used in foods and perfumes.
Lanier
U.S. football player. Born in Clover, Va., he was selected to the Little All-America Team while at Morgan State Univ. An outstanding defensive player, he played middle linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs (1967-77). He helped the Chiefs defeat the favored Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV (1970) and was selected to eight consecutive Pro Bowls.
Riviera
Coastal region bordering on the Mediterranean Sea in SE France and NW Italy. It extends from Cannes, France, to La Spezia, Italy. The Italian Riviera is divided into the Riviera di Ponente west of Genoa and the Riviera di Levante east of Genoa. The French Riviera is also called the C\u00f4 te d'Azur. Noted for its scenery and pleasant climate, it is one of the major tourist centers of Europe. sinter
Mineral deposit with a porous or vesicular texture (having small cavities). Siliceous sinter is a deposit of opaline or amorphous silica that occurs as an incrustation around hot springs and geysers and sometimes forms conical mounds (geyser cones) or terraces. Calcareous sinter, sometimes called tufa, calcareous tufa, or calc-tufa, is a deposit of calcium carbonate.
Teniers
Name of two Flemish painters. Little is known about the work of the elder Teniers (1582-1649) except that he painted primarily religious subjects. His more famous, highly prolific son (1610-1690) is best known for his genre scenes of peasant life, many of which were used for tapestry designs in the 18th cent. He was brilliant at handling crowd scenes in an open landscape and adept at characterizing his figures with a warm, human, and often humorous touch.
