Cush
Ancient country, Nubia region of the Nile River valley. In the 2nd millennium BC it was subject to Egypt. In the 8th cent. BC its King Piankhi invaded and conquered Egypt. It was ruled from 716 BC by Piankhi's brother Shabaka, who also invaded Egypt, and set up the 25th dynasty; he subsequently made Memphis his capital. In the early 6th cent. BC the Cushite kingdom's capital was transferred to Mero\u00eb , where the Cushites ruled for another 900 years.
rush
Any of several flowering plants distinguished by cylindrical stalks or hollow, stemlike leaves. They are found in temperate regions, particularly in moist or shady locations. The rush family (Juncaceae) includes the genera Juncus, the common rushes, and Luzula, the wood rushes. In many parts of the world, common rushes are woven into chair bottoms, mats, and basketwork, while rush pith serves as wicks in open oil lamps and tallow candles (rushlights). Other rushes include the bulrush (family Typhaceae), the horsetail (or scouring rush), the flowering rush (Butomus umbellatus, family Butomaceae), and the sweet rush, or sweet flag (Acorus calamus, arum family).
Austin
City (pop., 1996 est.: 541,000), capital of Texas. It was founded in 1835 as the village of Waterloo on the Colorado River in S central Texas. In 1839 it was made capital of the Republic of Texas and renamed to honor S. Austin; when Texas became a state in 1845, Austin remained its capital. As the home of the Univ. of Texas, it has expanded as a research and development center for defense and consumer industries. The L. B. Johnson Library is on the university campus.
Bashan
Ancient country, E Palestine. Frequently cited in the Old Testament and later important in the Roman empire, it was located in what is now Syria. In New Testament times, Bashan ranked as one of the great granaries of the Roman empire. One of its towns, Bozrah (Roman Bostra), was important to both Nabataea and Rome. Augustus made Herod the Great ruler of Bashan, and in AD 106 Trajan brought the whole Nabataean kingdom under the empire in creating the province of Arabia, with Bostra as its capital. The country went into decline in the 7th cent. as Muslims took over the area.
Basho
Japanese haiku poet, the greatest practitioner of the form. Following the Zen philosophy he studied, he attempted to compress the meaning of the world into the simple pattern of his poetry, disclosing hidden hopes in small things and showing the interdependence of all objects. His The Narrow Road to the Deep North (1694), a poetic prose travelogue, is one of the loveliest works of Japanese literature.
