Agulhas
Cape, southernmost point of the African continent. Its name, Portuguese for "needles," refers to the rocks and reefs that have wrecked many ships. The cape's meridian of 20\u00b0 E is the official boundary between the Indian and Atlantic oceans.

Drama of ancient Rome. Particular types included the fabula Atellana, the earliest form of native farce in ancient Italy; the fabula crepidata, a form of Roman tragedy based on Greek models; the fabula palliata, an ancient Roman comedy based on Greek New Comedy and treating a Greek subject; the fabula praetexta, an ancient Roman drama with a theme from Roman history or legend; and the fabula togata, a Roman comedy based on Greek models but featuring Roman life and dress.


kagura
In Shinto, a traditional style of music and dancing used in religious ceremonies. Kagura dances dedicated to native deities are a reenactment of the propitiatory dance that lured the sun goddess Amaterasu from her cave in ancient myth. Largely unchanged for the past 1,500 years, the dances are performed to the accompaniment of chants, drums, brass gongs, and flutes. The music is of two types: one to praise the spirits or seek their aid, the other to entertain the gods.


Nagaland
State (pop., 1994 est.: 1,410,000), NE India. It borders Myanmar and has an area of 6,366 sq mi (16,488 sq km). Its capital is Kohima. Except for a small area of plain, the entire state is covered with ranges of hills that are part of the Himalayas. Myanmar ruled the region 1819-26, until the British began annexing its hill areas. The Naga people accepted statehood within an independent India in 1963. There are more than 20 major Naga tribes and subtribes, with different dialects and customs. About two-thirds are Christian, and most others, Hindu or Muslim. Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy. Crops include rice, millet, sugarcane, potatoes, and tobacco.


nagual
In some Mesoamerican religions, a personal guardian spirit that resides in an animal. The person who wishes to find his nagual goes to sleep in an isolated spot, and the animal that appears in a dream or that confronts him when he awakens will thereafter be his guardian spirit. Many modern Mesoamerican Indians believe that the first creature to cross over the ashes spread before a newborn baby becomes the child's nagual. In some areas, nagual refers to the animal into which men with magical powers can transform themselves to do evil.


Pakula
U.S. film producer and director. Born in New York City, he worked in Hollywood from 1949.
