Part of the SW Pacific Ocean. It is located between Queensland, Australia, on the west and Vanuatu and New Caledonia on the east, and bordered on the north by Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Occupying an area of 1,849,800 sq mi (4,791,000 sq km), it merges with the Tasman Sea and Solomon Sea and is connected to the Arafura Sea via the Torres Strait. It was named for its many coral formations, incl. the Great Barrier Reef. During World War II it was the scene of a strategic U.S. naval and air victory over the Japanese (1942).
Loyalists
Amer. colonists loyal to Britain in the Amer. Revolution. About one-third of Amer. colonists were Loyalists, incl. officeholders who served the British crown, large landholders, wealthy merchants, Anglican clergy and their parishioners, and Quakers. Loyalists were most numerous in the South, New York, and Pennsylvania but did not constitute a majority in any colony. At first they urged moderation in the struggle for colonial rights; when denounced by radical patriots, they became active partisans. Some joined the British army, incl. 23,000 from New York; when captured in battle, they were treated as traitors. All states passed laws against them, confiscating or heavily taxing their property. Beginning in 1776 about 100,000 Loyalists fled into exile, many to Canada. Public sentiment against them diminished after 1789, and punitive state laws were repealed by 1814.
Morales
Spanish painter. He lived all his life in Badajoz, leaving only for occasional commissions. He is considered Spain's greatest Mannerist painter and is known especially for his emotional religious paintings. He always worked on panels, often depicting such subjects as the Ecce Homo, the Piet\u00e0 , and the Virgin and Child. His paintings show the influence of Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael, and are marked by detailed execution and the anguished asceticism of 16th-cent. Spain.
Novalis
German Romantic poet and theorist. Born into a noble family, he took his pseudonym from a former family name. He studied law and then mining, and in 1799 became a mine inspector. His beautiful Hymns to the Night (1800) express his grief on the death of his young fianc\u00e9 e. In the years before his own death from tuberculosis at 28, he drafted a philosophical system based on idealism and produced his most significant poetic work. His mythical romance Heinrich von Ofterdingen (1802) describes a young poet's mystical and romantic searchings.
oxalis
Any of about 850 species of small herbaceous plants that make up the genus Oxalis, native mostly to S Africa and tropical and S. America. Most members are familiar garden ornamentals.
