Possible definitions for melanoma
melanoma
Dark-colored tumor most often derived from melanin-pigmented skin cells. Though sometimes derived from other body tissues, they are called melanomas because of their dark color. A melanoma may or may not be malignant. It may develop from irritation of a mole or wart. Melanomas are prone to metastasize (see cancer) and are associated with the highest death rate of any skin cancer. Removal, together with a collar of surrounding healthy skin, cures melanoma if done early. Melanomas are very rare in persons with dark skin.
