Aalto
Finnish architect and designer. He graduated from the Technical Institute of Helsinki, and in 1925 married Aino Marsio (d.1949), who served as his collaborator. His reputation rests on a distinctive style that blends classic modernism, indigenous materials (especially timber), and personal expression. His unique blending of modernism and informal regional character was perhaps best expressed in his civic center at S\u00e4 yn\u00e4 tsalo (1950-52), with its simple forms in red brick, wood, and copper. He remains one of the Modern movement's most popular architects; reproductions of his bent laminated wood furniture appear in households worldwide.


Bali
Island (pop., 1995 est.: 2,900,000), Indonesia. Located in the Lesser Sunda Islands, off the E coast of Java, it constitutes, with minor adjacent islands, a province of Indonesia. The main towns are Singaraja, and Denpasar, the provincial capital. The island is mountainous; its highest peak is Mt. Agung (10,308 ft, or 3,142 m). Colonized by India in early times and supplemented by emigr\u00e9 s from Java in the 16th cent., Bali is the remaining stronghold of Hinduism in the Indonesian archipelago. Visited by the Dutch in the late 16th cent., it only came under Dutch rule in the late 19th cent. It was occupied by the Japanese in World War II. It became part of Indonesia in 1950. Tourism is increasingly important to its modern economy.


balm
Any of several fragrant herbs of the mint family, particularly Melissa officinalis (balm gentle, or lemon balm), cultivated in temperate climates for its fragrant leaves, which are used as a scent in perfumes and as a flavoring. The name is also applied to Melittis melissophyllum (bastard balm), Monarda didyma (bergamot, or bee balm), Collinsonia canadensis (horse balm), Glecoma hederacea and Satureja (Calamintha) nepeta (field balm), and Molucella laevis (Molucca balm, or bells of Ireland), as well as to aromatic substances from species of Commiphora (trees and shrubs of the incense-tree family).


Cali
City (pop., 1992 est.: 1,624,000), W Colombia. Lying on both sides of the Cali River, it was founded in 1536. Located far from the coast, it did not develop economically until the 20th cent., when the upper Cauca River was drained to generate electrical power and prevent flooding. It is a major service center for area products and rivals Bogot\u00e1 , Barranquilla, and Medell\u00ed n as an industrial center. In the late 20th cent. Cali was notorious for its drug operations.


gall
Abnormal, localized outgrowth or swelling of plant tissue caused by infection from bacteria, fungi, viruses, or nematodes, or by irritation by insects and mites. The common plant disease crown gall, characterized by the proliferation of galls on the roots and lower stems, is caused by the bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens.
