Leyster
Dutch painter. A brewer's daughter, she had gained membership in the Haarlem painters' guild by age 24. Many of her known works, primarily portraits, genre paintings, and still lifes, were formerly attributed to her male contemporaries. Though the influence of F. Hals is clear, she was also interested in the style of the Utrecht school. She embraced a greater range of subjects than other Dutch painters of the era, and was one of the first to depict domestic scenes.
Easter
Major festival of the Christian church year, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus on the third day after his crucifixion. In Western churches it falls on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25, depending on the date of the first full moon after the spring equinox. The date was fixed after the Council of Nicaea (AD 325). In the Eastern Orthodox calendar, which uses a different calculation, it often falls later. A joyful festival and a time of redemption, Easter brings an end to the long period of penance that constitutes Lent. The word is probably derived from Eostre, a Germanic goddess of spring, and some of its folk customs (e.g., the decoration of eggs as symbols of new life) may have originated with ancient pagan spring festivals. From the late 2nd cent., it has also been a time for baptism.
geyser
(Icelandic geysir, "to rush forth") Any hot spring that discharges jets of steam and water intermittently, generally associated with recent volcanic activity and produced by the heating of underground waters that have come into contact with, or are very close to, magma. Geyser discharges as high as 1,600 ft (500 m) have been recorded, but 160 ft (50 m) is much more common (e.g., Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park). Occasionally, a geyser will adopt an extremely regular and predictable pattern of intermittent activity and discharge for a few minutes every hour or so.
oyster
Any bivalve of two families, Ostreidae (true oysters) or Aviculidae (pearl oysters), found in temperate and warm coastal waters worldwide. Both valves (halves) have a rough, often dirty-gray outer surface and a smooth white lining (nacre). The lower valve, which affixes to a surface, is flattish. The smaller upper valve is convex and has rougher edges. The oyster filters its food, minute organic particles, from the water. Oysters are cultivated as a food, which is regarded as a delicacy. Pearls are the accumulation of nacre around a piece of foreign matter.
