Possible definitions for girondin

Girondin
Moderate republican member in the Legislative Assembly during the French Revolution. Many members were originally from the department of Gironde; as followers of J.-P. Brissot, they were initially called Brissotins. Dominant in the assembly in 1791-92, they supported foreign war as a means to unite the people behind the Revolution. In 1792 the National Convention was divided between them and the more radical Montagnards; in 1793 they were driven from the National Convention and the Montagnards seized power. Many Girondins were guillotined in the Reign of Terror.
