Arjan
Fifth Guru of the Sikhs (1581-1606) and its first martyr. He compiled the volume of Sikh scripture on which the Adi Granth is based, and he completed the Golden Temple at Amritsar. The first Guru to serve as both temporal and spiritual head of Sikhism, he built up Amritsar as a commercial center and enlarged missionary efforts. He was also a prolific poet and writer of hymns. He prospered under the tolerant Mughal emperor Akbar, but was tortured to death by Akbar's successor for not altering the Adi Granth to remove passages that gave offense to Hinduism or Islam.


bean
Seed or pod of certain leguminous plants (see legume). The mature seeds of the principal food beans, except soybeans, are similar in composition, though they differ widely in eating quality. Rich in protein and providing moderate amounts of iron and vitamins B1 and B2, fresh or dried beans are used worldwide for cooking. Varieties differ greatly in size, shape, color, and tenderness of the immature pods. The common string, snap, or green bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) of Central and S. Amer. origin is the dominant edible-podded bean in the U.S., second to the soybean in importance. Third in importance is the broad, or fava, bean (Vicia faba), the principal bean of Europe. The lima bean (P. limensis), of Central Amer. origin, is commercially important in few countries outside the Americas. The scarlet runner bean (P. coccineus) is native to the New World tropics and is grown in Europe for its attractive flowers and fleshy immature pods. The mung bean, or green gram (P. aureus), is native to India and grown extensively in the Orient for food.


Behan
Irish author. An alcoholic from age 8 and an anti-English rebel, he was repeatedly arrested. Borstal Boy (1958) is an account of his detention in an English reform school, which combines earthy satire and powerful political commentary. His first play, The Quare Fellow (1954), is an explosive statement on capital punishment and prison life. His second, The Hostage (produced 1958), is considered his masterwork. He also wrote poetry, short stories, radio scripts, anecdotes, memoirs, and a novel.


Besant
British social reformer. She was a prominent Fabian socialist in the 1880s before becoming an adherent of theosophy in 1889. She served as international president of the Theosophical Society from 1907 until her death, and her writings are still considered some of the best expositions of theosophical belief. After emigrating to India, she became an Indian independence leader and established the Indian Home Rule League in 1916.


Bevan
British politician. As a young man, he entered Labour Party politics and was elected to the House of Commons in 1929. He overcame a speech impediment to become a brilliant orator. As minister of health in C. Attlee's government (1945-51), "Nye" Bevan established the National Health Service. He was minister of labor (1951) ...
