broom
In botany, any of several leguminous shrubs or small trees of the genus Cytisus, native to temperate regions of Europe and W Asia. They are cultivated widely, chiefly for their attractive flowers. The compound leaves have three leaflets. The solitary or clustered yellow, purple, or white flowers resemble pea flowers. The fruit is a flat pod. A common, almost leafless species is C. scoparius, a shrub with bright yellow flowers often grown for erosion control in warm climates. Butcher's broom (Ruscus aculeatus) is a shrub of the lily family with small whitish flowers and red berries.
Chamoun
President of Lebanon (1952-58). He reorganized government departments to increase efficiency and allowed the press and opposition considerable freedom. International tensions rose in 1956 when he refused to break relations with Britain and France over the Suez Crisis. In 1958, when Syria and Egypt formed the short-lived United Arab Republic, he refused pleas from Lebanon's Muslims to join. Armed rebellion broke out, and Chamoun did not seek a second presidential term. He held ministerial posts during the Lebanese civil war (1975-91).
Chaos
In Greek cosmology, either the primeval emptiness before things came into being or the abyss of Tartarus, the underworld. In Hesiod's Theogony, there was first Chaos, then Gaea and Eros. The offspring of Chaos were Erebus (Darkness) and Nyx (Night). Ovid gave Chaos its modern meaning: the original formless and disordered mass from which the ordered universe is created. The early church fathers applied this interpretation to the creation story in Genesis.
charm
In particle physics, the property or internal quantum number that is conserved in strong and electromagnetic interactions, but not in weak interactions (see strong force, electromagnetic force, weak force). Charmed particles contain at least one charmed quark; the charm number of these quarks is +1. Charmed antiquarks (see antimatter) have a charm number of -1. The first charmed particle was discovered in 1974.
Chiem
Lake, S Germany. Located southeast of Munich, it lies 1,699 ft (518 m) above sea level, and drains through the Alz River into the Inn River. At 9 mi (15 km) long and 5 mi (8 km) wide, it is Bavaria's largest lake. One of its three islands has a Benedictine monastery and a royal castle modeled on the palace at Versailles.
Chios
Island (pop., 1991: 53,000), Aegean Sea. Lying 5 mi (8 km) west of Turkey, it comprises, with some adjacent islands, a department of Greece. Of volcanic origin, it is 30 mi (48 km) long and 8-15 mi (13-24 km) wide, with an area of 325 sq mi (842 sq km). It was noted in antiquity as Homer's birthplace and the home of a school of sculptors.
