bead
Small round object made of wood, shell, bone, seed, nut, metal, stone, glass, or plastic. It is usually pierced for stringing so that it can be worn for decorative or, in some cultures, magical purposes. The earliest Egyptian beads (from c.4000 BC) were made of stone, feldspar, lapis lazuli, carnelian, turquoise, hematite, or amethyst and were variously shaped (sphere, cone, shell, animal head). By 3000-2000 BC, gold beads in tubular shapes were in use. From the Middle Ages to the 18th cent., trade in beads was enormous. Today the richness of beadwork varies with fashion.

Belhadj
Deputy leader of the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS), Algeria's main opposition group. Born in Tunisia to Algerian parents, he became a high-school teacher and imam. He and the more moderate A. Mandani registered FIS as a political party in 1989. In 1990 FIS won a majority of votes in local elections; in 1991 the Algerian government announced martial law and imprisoned Belhadj and Mandani. In 1994 Belhadj was transferred to house arrest.

bread
Baked food product made of flour or meal that is moistened, kneaded into a dough, and often fermented using yeast. A major food since prehistoric times, bread has been made in various forms using a variety of ingredients and methods throughout the world. Flat, unleavened bread, the earliest form, is still eaten in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. The principal grains used in such breads are corn, barley, millet, buckwheat, wheat, and rye. Raised bread, common in Europe and the U.S., is usually made of wheat or rye. Both contain the elastic protein substance gluten, which traps gas produced during fermentation, helping the bread to rise. Other ingredients include milk or water, shortening (fats, butter, oils), salt, and sugar. Bread is a source of complex carbohydrates and B vitamins (see vitamin B complex); whole-wheat bread contains more protein, vitamins, minerals, and fiber than white-flour bread. See also baking.

Medea
In Greek mythology, the daughter of King Aeetes of Colchis. After helping Jason, leader of the Argonauts, to obtain the Golden Fleece from her father, the two were married and she returned with him to Iolcos, where she killed the king who had deprived Jason of his inheritance. Forced into exile, the couple settled in Corinth. In Euripides' tragedy Medea, Jason later deserts her for the daughter of King Creon, and Medea takes revenge by killing Creon, his daughter, and her own two children by Jason before fleeing to Athens.
